Great Effort by Nationals RF Abreu Not Enough in 7-6 Loss
|
Despite a fine performance by right fielder Wilyer Abreu, the Washington Nationals lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-6. Abreu went 3-4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. The winning pitcher was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Gavin Williams. He tossed 112 pitches over 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Mason Miller closed the game out for Arizona, earning his 10th save.
James Wood had a big 3-run home run for the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the second inning. With Arizona trailing 3-2 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he sized up a sinker from Lance McCullers Jr., who is tied for 2nd in the NL in wins with 7, and punished it. The result was his 8th home run of the season, which put the Diamondbacks on top, 5-3.
"It never gets old," said Wood. "Winning, that is."
The Diamondbacks improved their record to 36-22 with the win over Washington.
