The Pittsburgh Pirates got a sterling performance from pitcher Nick Pivetta, but the Chicago Cubs still prevailed, 4-1. Pivetta threw 6.0 innings allowing 4 runs. The winner was Chicago reliever Forrest Whitley, now 4-2. The loser was Nick Pivetta. Getting the save was Andres Munoz, his 16th.
Jack Suwinski had a big 2-run home run for the Cubs in the bottom of the second inning. With Chicago leading 2-1 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a cutter from Nick Pivetta, who is tied for 7th in the NL with a 10.6 K/9 rate, and punished it. The result was his 19th home run of the season, which put the Cubs on top, 4-1.
"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Suwinski. "You've got to get results."
Chicago improves to 38-33 with the win. They lead their division by 4 games.
