Pirates Handle St. Louis, Snag 5-4 Win
|
Nick Pivetta, who is tied for 5th in the NL with a 10.7 K/9 rate, propelled his team to victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The final score was 5-4, Pittsburgh. Pierce Johnson was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 14 of 18 save opportunities. Pittsburgh is now 40-47, St. Louis 30-57.
Matt Chapman had a big 2-run home run for the Pirates in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Pittsburgh leading 3-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a changeup from Marcus Stroman and swatted a home run to left-center. It was his 13th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Pirates ahead, 5-0.
"We ground out the win," said Chapman. "That's all that matters."
