The Chicago Cubs overcame a pretty good performance by Kansas City first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, beating the Royals, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. Goldschmidt was 4-5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Reliever Ryan Thompson picked up the win. His record improves to 4-0. Cody Poteet took the loss. Andres Munoz got the save, his 25th in 28 chances.
Had Dylan Moore not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Moore hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Cubs.
"Our guys are never satisfied," said Chicago manager Bryan H.
The first-place Cubs have won 5 in a row.
