Red Sox Nip Tigers, 9-8
|
The rain came, as predicted, but the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers were able to complete their ballgame.
Despite the exploits of shortstop Matt McLain, the Detroit Tigers were beaten by the Boston Red Sox, 9-8, in 10 innings. McLain was 2-4 with a home run, while adding 5 RBI and scoring once. Boston pitcher Tyler Holton earned the win, hiking his record to 2-2. Dylan Lee suffered the loss. Alexis Diaz was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 26 of 31 save opportunities.
José Caballero drew 3 walks in 6 trips to the plate for Boston. The 28-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the tenth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 8-8 tie with a run-scoring walk off Julian Merryweather. It was his 15th walk of the season.
"I felt good up there," said Caballero. "I saw the ball well."
With the win, Boston pushed its record to 71-64.
