Wells Rips 2 Home Runs in 7-2 Nationals Triumph
|
The Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets, 7-2, in part because of catcher Austin Wells. Wells was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice for the Nationals. John Means got the win, improving to 6-14. He worked 5.2 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 9 and walking 1. Washington is now 75-79, while New York is 87-67.
With Washington leading 2-0 in the top of the third, Wells hit a 2-run single off New York hurler Chayce McDermott. It was the 92nd hit of the season for Wells and put his team ahead, 4-0.
"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Wells said.
