Pittsburgh Slaps 6-1 Loss on Tampa Bay
The Pittsburgh Pirates went home winners at Tropicana Field, thanks in large part to starter Reid Detmers. Detmers stifled the Tampa Bay Rays, enabling Pittsburgh to grab the 6-1 win. Detmers, now 1-1, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 5, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Tampa Bay now has a record of 3-3.

Anthony Volpe had a big 2-run home run for the Pirates in the top of the fourth inning. With Pittsburgh leading 2-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a slider from Tony Gonsolin, who finished 2nd in the NL in innings pitched with 229.2 in 2023, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Pirates on top, 4-0.

"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Pirates manager Jake S, "I like our chances."
