Jesus Luzardo, who finished 4th in the NL in strikeouts with 217 last year, was terrific for the Chicago Cubs in his team's 4-1 triumph over the San Diego Padres. His performance earned Luzardo rave reviews. Luzardo picked up the win for Chicago, going 5.2 innings. He gave up no runs on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 1-1. The victory makes Chicago 6-4, as the team seeks a return to the playoffs in 2025.
San Diego had a runner on 1st in the top of the eighth. With one out, Yandy Díaz stood at the plate, hoping to find a gap. Instead, he hit into a double play. The score remained 2-0, Chicago. The Padres never could mount a comeback.
